Nicotine-Free Pouches Are Raising Millions as Wellness Brands Clone the Zyn Format

Ultra raised $11M and sold 1 million cans in six months. Blip landed in 7,000+ stores. The pouch format Zyn made mainstream is now the delivery mechanism for nootropics, not nicotine.

The pouch format that made Zyn a household name is getting a wellness makeover. Startups are taking the same upper-lip delivery mechanism, stripping out the nicotine entirely, and replacing it with nootropics like paraxanthine, L-theanine, and Alpha GPC. And investors are paying attention: Ultra just closed an $11 million Series A, while Blip landed distribution in over 7,000 retail locations including Target, Walmart, CVS, and Walgreens.

This isn't a niche play. As Blip CEO Katherine Prime told Inc. in July 2026: "Pouches are what gummies were five years ago. This is becoming a much more normalized format that Gen-Z is familiar with."

The Numbers Behind the Nicotine-Free Pouch Boom

Ultra closed its $11 million Series A in January 2026, led by Left Lane Capital, per Tobacco Reporter. Backers include CPG founders from Harry's, Grüns, and Rockstar Energy, plus celebrity athletes Joe Burrow, Lindsey Vonn, and Dak Prescott. The company launched in May 2025 and sold 1 million cans in its first six months. Ultra's pouches contain paraxanthine (via Enfinity), L-theanine, Alpha GPC, B vitamins, and ginseng — marketed as "clean, sustained focus" without nicotine.

Blip launched its first nootropic oral pouch in July 2026, available in Wintermint and Tropical Passion flavors. Ingredients include L-theanine, paraxanthine, NAD+, and Alpha GPC. No nicotine, no caffeine, no sugar. The company originally launched in 2023 with FDA-approved nicotine gums and lozenges before expanding to nicotine-free products. It's now in 7,000+ retail locations, as reported by Inc.

Plopii, a Brooklyn biotech company, launched paraxanthine-powered focus pouches in June 2026, per PR Newswire. Five flavors, all nicotine-free, positioning paraxanthine as "caffeine's primary active metabolite" for jitter-free energy.

Why Pouches? Faster Absorption Than Pills or Drinks

The appeal isn't just format familiarity. Pouches bypass the digestive system, delivering ingredients through the oral mucosa for faster absorption than pills or drinks, per Inc. That's the same mechanism that made nicotine pouches effective — now applied to functional wellness ingredients.

Business Insider reported in July 2026 that pouches have become "the hottest way to improve your sleep, focus, or teeth color." Eric Drymer, who started a pouch company after using nicotine pouches to quit vaping, told the outlet he was "fascinated by the form factor" and noticed everyone around him using them.

The category itself isn't brand new. About 15 years ago, Grinds Pouches arguably created the nicotine-free pouch category by targeting the format for energy, per NutraIngredients in February 2026. But the recent wave of VC-backed launches and mass-retail distribution marks a clear acceleration.

What's Next: Sleep, Calm, and Retail Expansion

Blip's Prime told Inc. the company plans to expand the pouch format to sleep and calm products. Ultra, currently DTC-focused, plans to push into wider retail following its Series A, per Tobacco Reporter.

NutraIngredients called mouth pouches "one of the fastest growing CPG categories," noting their popularity among consumers including at the gym. The format is shifting from nicotine alternative to general wellness delivery mechanism — a trend investors are clearly willing to fund.
